Chapin Library Moving in 2008

In advance of the planned renovation of Stetson Hall and construction of an adjacent library/technology center, the Chapin Library must move its operations to temporary quarters beginning in summer 2008. Three apartments in the historic Southworth Schoolhouse, near campus on the corner of Southworth and School Streets, will serve as the reading room and offices of both the Chapin Library and the Archives and Special Collections department of the Williams College Library. The bulk of the Chapin holdings will be stored in off-site high-density shelving until the new Stetson/Sawyer complex opens in 2011, and will not be generally available for use in the interim. A small working collection, however, will be kept at the Southworth Schoolhouse, while the Founding Documents of the United States will be on temporary display in the Williams College Museum of Art
.

During the years of construction, the Chapin Library will continue to offer research assistance to the Williams community and to make presentations to class groups when requested. For us to do so most effectively, we ask that any members of the faculty wishing to use specific books or manuscripts or portions of collections, in teaching or for personal research, in the 2008-2011 period contact Chapin staff as soon as possible. Materials so identified will be kept at hand in temporary quarters, space permitting, or stored for easy retrieval at the off-site facility.

In order to complete packing by early summer 2008, the Chapin Library has closed its doors and suspended its services. A public announcement will be made upon the re-opening of Williams special collections at the Southworth Schoolhouse later in the year.
